At a special event at Illawarra Performing Arts Centre, Merrigong Theatre Company revealed their 2017 lineup, which includes smash hit cabaret VELVET.
Merrigong Artistic Director, Simon Hinton said “Season 2017 is a celebration of characters. From some of the great theatrical classics, like Cyrano de Bergerac, to characters that give us a window into the current issues of our society […] It’s a year
rich in great characters and their stories.”
Highlights of the program include:
- The Australian premiere of Edinburgh Fringe sell out Angel by Henry Naylor. Inspired by true events, the play follows sniper Rehana, the daughter of a pistachio farmer, who, with her fellow female soldiers, helps hold the line as ISIS lay siege to the town of Kobane.
- Wollongong set Diving For Pearls, an 80s based tale by award winning writer and Theatre South founder Katherine Thomson.
- Original musical work The Outside Man, produced in collaboration with The Disability Trust and featuring performers with intellectual disabilities.
- Two French classics – an adaptation of Emile Zola‘s Thérèse Raquin, and a production of Edmond Rostand‘s Cyrano de Bergerac.
More information, including tickets and the full season’s lineup, can be found at the Merrigong Theatre Company website.
VELVET, an homage to the iconic Studio 54, stars legendary diva Marcia Hines, and will be the inaugural production for the first ever Spiegeltent Wollongong season. The full Spiegeltent program will be announced in early 2017.
