Melbourne Theatre Company have pulled together a powerhouse cast for their new production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The production, directed by Simon Phillips, is the third and final instalment in a trilogy of Shakespearian reinterpretations directed by Phillips for Melbourne Theatre Company, following on from acclaimed productions of Hamlet and Richard III.
Taking on the iconic lead role of Macbeth will be Suicide Squad’s Jai Courtney, in what will be somewhat of a homecoming for the Sydney born actor. Courtney also attended the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Courtney will find himself alongside another WAAPA graduate, with Geraldine Hakewill, of Seven’s Wanted fame, taking on the role of Lady Macbeth. Also amongst the cast will be Rodney Afif (Hotel Mumbai), Shareena Clanton (Wentworth) and Kevin Hofbauer (Offspring), to name but just a few.
Director Simon Phillips had this to say about the production, “I’m so delighted to be returning to the Company with a Shakespeare – my greatest theatrical passion. This is probably his most visceral play – it operates on the head and the heart in equal measure, inviting the audience into the irrational world of its anti-hero. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s relationship is so superbly elucidated and conceived, and the gender politics that go on are totally contemporary. They defy time, they’re so strongly drawn. I’m particularly excited to work with Jai and Geraldine – and indeed all these terrific actors– to bring these seminal roles to life. The results will hopefully be compelling, chilling and spasmodically heart-rending.”
The season runs from 5th June until the 15th July at Melbourne’s Southbank Theatre, with the Opening Night performance taking place on Friday 9th June. Tickets are on sale now. For more information, including a full cast and crew list, and to purchase tickets visit HERE
