The Langham, Sydney has been in soft launch phase since it re-opened its doors following a multi-million dollar redesign at the end of last year, and now the highly anticipated official launch of Australia’s newest five star hotel is set to take place this month…
The redevelopment of the internationally designed hotel, which was purchased by Langham Hospitality Group in 2012 and re-branded as The Langham, Sydney in the same year, was executed in just four months, making it one of the country’s fastest hotel development projects to date.
Commenting on the redevelopment, the hotel’s general manager, Sonia Leferve said: “Sydney is a glamourous city, like Paris, London or New York and we wanted to cater to people who are aspirational about these style of cities.
“A dramatic arrival experience, mixology with jazz after 5pm, the biggest guestrooms in Sydney, signature terraces with water views, take away picnic boxes, pink bicycles and bespoke maps for local touring, a million dollar Sotheby’s art collection, dog friendly suites, private butler tennis afternoons – all very unique offerings for a Sydney hotel.”
The hotel includes 98 rooms and suites, including the Grand Langham room – the largest standard room in Sydney, two or three bedroom Residence Suites, which are equipped with a private chefs kitchenette, and The Observatory Suite.
“Each room features ornate design pieces; from Vogue hard cover books, to silver Wedgwood bedside clocks and Kate Spade designer pieces,” added Lefevre.
THE DESIGN
London-based GA Design was involved in the design of every detail of the hotel, including the structure of each space, whether it be the rooms and suites or famous day spa, interior fit out and furniture inside the hotel – think marble fireplaces, chairs, tables, bed heads, chandeliers, handmade rugs and lamp shades.
“Everything is hand designed; created specifically for this hotel,” said Su Ball, executive direct at GA London.
“Langham is such an iconic brand that we wanted to ensure our designs communicated the story of the hotels’ grand history whilst simultaneously reinvigorating the spaces with contemporary design elements combined with sophisticated and classic references.”
Commenting on GA London’s approach to the hotel’s redesign, Ball said: “In order to give the hotel a high-end residential feel, we introduced rich, elegant materials and stylish features aiming to produce unique yet timeless spaces for the guests to enjoy.
“Our hope is that The Langham, Sydney will be recognised as the most luxurious hotel in Australia and be testament to the eminent Langham brand,” she added.
NEW FEATURES AND ACTIVITIES
The redesign encompasses a number of new features and activities for guests, including an Afternoon Tea with Wedgwoodin the Palm Court room, which offers views of the western harbour. From late afternoon onwards, the Palm Court Barserves up gastronomic cocktails accompanied by jazz music.
The hotel is complete with a new restaurant, Kent Street Kitchen, which is headed up by Daniel Rudolph, formerly of est. and Guy Savoy Paris.
The restaurant serves up European style cuisine and features an open plan kitchen, which includes a three metre long white marble Chef’s Table in its centre.
The Day Spa has received a multi-million dollar re-design of its own, however it’s famous star dazzled pool, which was recently voted Sydney’s #1 Hotel Pool by Wotif travellers, remains intact, making it the only element of the hotel that has not been changed.
Private Butler Tennis Afternoons on the hotel’s city-scape tennis court complete with cucumber sandwiches and Pimms & Lemonade are also soon to be launched.
ART IN FOCUS
The hotel features a new collection of artwork hand curated by Sothey’s, with the creations of Australian artists including Sidney Nolan, Andrew Browne, Albert Tucker and Brett Whitley available to view on the ground level.
“The collection is striking and encourages visitors and guests to wander through the public spaces and explore the ground level at their own leisure” commented Lefevre.
“This isn’t just a hotel for guests staying with us, this is a new destination for Sydney-siders to indulge in.”
