In a city that has its pulse in large scale grandiosity, how can one hotel stand out? The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas shows us how.
After a valet quickly assisted in emptying our bags and taking our car away, we entered into a contemporary, palatial foyer where screens displayed silhouetted figures embracing and trying to break free – the opposite of how we felt. A speedy check-in allowed us to immediately find our way to our Las Vegas abode.
As we walked through our door, our Terrace One Bedroom swept into the distance as the enormity of the space became realised. A self-contained kitchenette opposed a desk beneath a TV on another wall, before wardrobe space flowed into a King Size bed that lay beyond telescoping doors. Beyond the bed lay the image you would see on any Las Vegas postcard.
Surprisingly, balconies and terraces are a rare inclusion in Las Vegas rooms (unless you’re lucky enough to be shelling out for a ridiculous suite), but at The Cosmopolitan, panoramic views of the fountain below and the Las Vegas skyline illuminated and praised the luxurious heritage associated with such a location, yet privacy was always a recognised feeling when in the expansive room. For the amount of time we spent on the 110 sq. ft. balcony, no surrounding balconies or rooms were ever heard. Instead the fountain, the wind, and a low hum from the buzz that resonated from the heart of the Las Vegas experience were invitations to join in.
The private terrace overlooked the famous landmarks, highlighting its centrality yet was dislocated from the clamor of The Strip – the ability to decompress and admire was instantaneous. If lying on the terrace and absorbing the view isn’t to your liking, a full-scale Japanese soaking tub is located at the end of the shower and wet-room to allow for soaking, champagne and appreciate the enlightenment of the view.
The scale of the shower and wet-room rivaled that of the bedroom with floor to ceiling tanned, pale stone tiles detailing the room’s ultimate contemporary luxury. Two wash-basins and the space in the bathroom allowed for unobstructed cleaning and dressing before we ventured off to explore the expansive casino, food and bar areas of The Cosmopolitan.
Limitless tables, slot machines and bars were the scenery for our stroll to Holsteins, situated in the hotel, for a meal. ‘Holsteins Shakes and Buns’ offer exactly what’s in their name, but the depth of their menu was surprising, creative and impressive.
Our ‘Captain Hook’ (seared salmon with remoulade sauce, smoked salmon, frissee and pickled shallots) and ‘Gold Standard’ (dry aged beef sirloin burger with smoked bacon, aged goat cheddar cheese, tomato confit, baby arugula and garlic-chive oil) burgers followed starters of Fried Pickles with herb-caper mayonnaise and Buffalo Chicken Dip. Neither meat on our burgers was dry or flaky – both were cooked to our desired liking and melted with each bite.
The portions were of considerable size and the soft buns held the towers of layered goodness together to the last bite. A long list of IPA’s and nation-wide American beer companies on the drinks menu complemented our sensory Americana meal. All urges were fulfilled, and even considering what the other bars of restaurant offered just nearby to Holsteins was not an available thought.
Following a night of walking and attempts to conquer the beast that is Las Vegas, a return to our One Bedroom Terrace highlighted the dichotomy The Cosmopolitan showcases. Its centrality to The Strip means easy access to the frenzied fun of everything you dream Las Vegas to be, yet allowed for the blissful invitation into opulent luxury and rest.
