Box Office Report: LEGO takes top spot while Divergent and Budapest also shine

This was another huge weekend at the Australian box office, with six films earning over $1 million! The hugely popular The LEGO Movie was able to overtake last weekend’s champ Captain America: The Winter Soldier by around $1.5 million. Considering we are now in the school holiday period, expect The LEGO Movie to continue making big bucks in the coming weeks.

Of the three new releases, young adult adaptation Divergent fared the best with $3.16 million, while Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest made an incredible $1.81 million. Not bad for a director who is normally considered to produce art-house films. Positive word of mouth should give The Grand Budapest Hotel impressive legs, as reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. The third new release, Muppets Most Wanted, did not do so well, debuting to a disappointing $0.82 million.

This week sees the release of yet another superhero blockbuster, with the return of everyone’s favourite web-slinger in The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro. The film follows Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) and his struggle to balance his crime-fighting life with his relationship with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). Jamie Foxx and Dane DeHaan co-star as Electro and Harry Osbourne. Expect this one to take the top spot at the box office this weekend. Also being released are period romance The Invisible Woman, directed by and starring Ralph Fiennes, and romantic comedy The Other Woman, starring Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann.
