It’s been almost 30 years since Max Rockatansky last appeared onscreen in 1985’s Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Ever since then, rumours popped up every few years that director George Miller was planning a fourth entry in the groundbreaking Australian series. The fourth film, Mad Max: Fury Road, was confirmed to be shooting in 2011 in Broekn Hill. After rains left the landscape too green to protray the post-apocalyptic wasteland Miller needed, production was postponed and moved to Namibia. Shooting was completed, and we are only now getting our first glimpse at footage from the film, which was shown at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend.
The mostly-wordless footage shows some breathtaking imagery. It is clear that Miller has not lost his touch and the film looks set to be a riveting action thriller. It boasts an impressive cast led by Tom Hardy (taking over from original Max Mel Gibson), also including Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult. It is somewhat unclear whether Fury Road is a sequel or a reboot of the original trilogy, with evidence pointing to it being a mixture of both.
