When Laura Palmer uttered the phrase “I will see you again in 25 years” I don’t think many people would have taken her too seriously. It seems we should be less cynical, because the mind-warping Twin Peaks will return to television in 2016, 25 years after the second season ended following a cancellation. Showtime has announced that it will be a limited run consisting of just nine one-hour episodes, but the show’s original creators, David Lynch and Mark Frost, will both be involved – Lynch as director, and Frost as writer.
The series has influenced countless of the most popular television shows in recent years, and while questions of it’s relevance may be floating around – as they inevitably do when reboots are announced – fans can be rest assured that at least the show will be in the hands of those masterminds who can stay consistent with the vision for Twin Peaks; whatever that may be.
To add to the spookiness of it all, a teaser has been released complete with creepy, atmospheric fuzz, that embarrassingly big lettering, and that unmistakable theme song. It’s time to get officially excited, go back and watch the first two seasons, and spend the next two years knowing that you’ll – hopefully – get some closure on one of the greatest things to ever happen on television.
