Poland 1962. Anna, a young nun, orphaned from birth, is summoned after many years by her estranged aunt Wanda. Wanda is a successful judge having during her career prosecuted criminals who have been sentenced to death for war crimes. She is also an alcoholic. Upon meeting Anna she shows the nun pictures of her family and reveals that her birth name is Ida and she is of Jewish origin. Anna also learns that she also had a brother who was killed along with her parents during the war. The axis having been removed from the insular world in which she has formed her identity Anna must come to terms with the revelation. She insists on finding the bodies and with Wanda they embark on a haunting road trip to pursue the forgotten family origins.
Directed by Paweł Pawlikowski and staring Agata Kulesza and Agata Trzebuchowska, Ida is a stunning film that has just recently been nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Foreign Film and Best Cinematography.
