Well, if the BAFTA’s are any indication, the race of Best Picture at the Oscars this year remains wide open, with Boyhood taking home the BAFTA for Best Picture at today’s ceremony in London. The film took home three awards in total, also snagging Best Director (Richard Linklater) and Best Actress (Patricia Arquette). Meanwhile, another film in the running for Best Picture at the Oscars after winning the Globe, The Grand Budapest Hotel, took home 5 of its 11 nominations, including Wes Anderson for Best Original Screenplay.
Most of the BAFTA awards, however, have followed the trend so far. Eddie Redmayne again has taken home Best Actor for his portrayal of Stephen Hawkings in The Theory Of Everything, which won 3 trophies in total – as did Whiplash, which again saw J.K. Simmons take home Best Supporting Actor. Still Alice‘s Julianne Moore also continued her award sweep with her Best Actress BAFTA.
A lot of the talk today has been on The LEGO Movie, which won Best Animated Feature, following being snubbed at the Academy Awards. Birdman, which is another favourite to win at the Oscars, only managed to snag a (well deserved) Best Cinematography trophy, but all in all one thing is certain: there really weren’t that many British films to be awarded at the British Academy Awards were there? The Theory Of Everything took home the Best British Film of the Year award.
