To celebrate the official launch of Netflix in Australia we were lucky enough to pop along to the red carpet event at the Museum of Contemporary Art the other night. Attending the event was a stack of celebrities, most of whom all feature on programs we’ll get to see on the streaming service provider. We got to have a chat with some of them and get the low down on their respective shows.
From Netflix’s own production house in conjunction with Marvel they’ll be exclusively releasing their live action comic book adaptation of Daredevil from April 11. Charlie Cox gave us some insight into how he got into character as the blind Matt Murdock by day and superhero Daredevil by night. “As a byproduct of his accident his senses are heightened to a degree that he’s able to operate better than a sighted person. It’s very intriguing and interesting and lends a new dynamic to the superhero universe, and it’s a real thing and fascinating to learn about. I worked with a gentleman who’s been blind for 20 years and he uses echolocation to a certain degree and he was immensely helpful and able to impart his knowledge on the character as well.”
His Daredevil co-star Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood) said that if she had superpowers “Super strength and super speed would be great, I could get the laundry done real fast but it’s a nice change to get to play a normal human this time”. Deborah will be portraying Karen Page, the love interest and also fellow lawyer with Murdock in the series.

One of Netflix’s most popular series Orange Is The New Black is available to stream Seasons 1 and 2 as of right now, with all of Season 3 to be released on June 12 for your binge-watching pleasure just the same as the US Netflix. Australia’s own Yael Stone who plays Lorna Morello says we can expect “Some really interesting nuanced exploration, we go a little deeper than before and in some ways we’re circling back to more simpler looking at characters”.
Another Netflix exclusive Marco Polo, is a grand sweeping series based on the explorer’s travels through 13th Century China. Italian model and now actor, Lorenzo Richelmy shared his thoughts on the show “Since I’m Italian I knew a bit more than people from other countries, but you study Marco Polo in school, and in the history books you hear he’s a merchant or story teller I didn’t really know exactly his story. So when I first got the job, John Fusco the show creator got me a ton of books to relate but we all know what he did and where he went but we don’t really know what he was his personality. We shot the beginning of the journey of Marco Polo, not the Marco Polo we all know but the young one, he has to become the big man the big adventurer, so it’s beautiful to see him growing, see a kid becoming an adult. It’s been incredible.”
Aussie actor Remy Hii (Neighbors) and Uli Latukefu (Jonah From Tonga) are also both co-stars in Marco Polo and both didn’t have much prior knowledge before being involved in the show. Uli says “I didn’t know much at all, obviously other than the pool game, but it’s been a real big journey, I’ve been learning more and for me seeing the scope and extent of his journey and experience is pretty inspiring. As a people, the Mongols, they were really quite ahead of their time.” Remy says “I knew about as much as they taught in school, which was not a great deal. But that’s just one of the great things about being an actor, being able to immerse yourself and learn about these stories. The history of the Mongol Empire is one of the great untold stories of today.”

Jennette McCurdy will be starring in a new Canadian drama series titled Between about a town where everybody under the age of 21 has managed to survive a deadly virus and how what remains of society is left to struggle in the resulting power vacuum. Jennette is optimistic that we won’t have to endure our own viral epidemic in the real world and suggests the reason why we enjoy these stories “We live vicariously through the thrill of the possibility, but I can sleep better at night knowing that it won’t happen”.
Between is set to air from May 21 on the streaming service provider on a week to week basis.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt stars the delightful Ellie Kemper who plays a young lady that had been living in an underground bunker as part of a cult for 15 years but is then rescued and decides to try and start her life over again. Ellie describes Kimmy and how even she relates to her occasional naive moments “By necessity she’s literally been sheltered, but she’s not a dunce, any missteps or misunderstandings is simply a result of not knowing how the world is. I sometimes feel that way myself, like Where was I for that? So no, unfortunately I feel like I can relate to her at some times”
