For WoW fans eagerly waiting to see Azeroth come to life on the big screen, you’re going to have to be patient a while longer. Universal and Legendary pictures have announced another delay for the big-budget Warcraft movie today which will see the fantasy blockbuster slip to June 10, 2016.
Originally slated for release December 18, 2015, the Duncan Jones-helmed film adaptation of Blizzard’s most popular gaming franchise was bumped to March 11, 2016 to avoid clashing with Star Wars: The Force Awakens (and really, who can blame them for that?). Filming on Warcraft wrapped way back in May 2014.
Not much of the film has been seen so far, with only a very short clip debuting at BlizzCon last year that showed off what the orcs and humans in the movie – Orgrim Doomhammer and King Llane in particular – will look like when the film arrives.
Jones, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Charles Leavitt (K-PAX, Blood Diamond and last year’s Seventh Son), discussed some of the story a year earlier at BlizzCon 2013 saying it was an origin story that deals with the first contact between Lothar and Durotan.
“One of the real difficult decisions we had was what part of the lore to focus on,” Jones said at the time, was that Warcraft has “such a huge, vast timeline,” that the goal was to get “to the root of what Warcraft is and where it came from.”
A shame we have to wait a bit longer, but here’s the bright side – it couldn’t possibly take them any longer to finish than it will take Blizzard to make a Warcraft 4.
