Australian Box Office Report: The Avengers: Age of Ultron grabs the third biggest opening of all time.

It was a huge weekend at the Australian Box Office, with Avengers: Age of Ultron raking in $15.7 million at the top. This makes the film the third biggest opening in Australia of all time, behind the final Harry Potter film and the second Twilight, knocking Fast and Furious 7 off its perch, where it had sat for an impressive three weeks.

For its fourth week, $1.6 Million is by no means unimpressive for the 7th film in the action film series, which is currently the highest grossing film of 2015, having been the first film ever to reach $1 billion worldwide in just 17 days. It’s already the fourth highest grossing film of all time, internationally.

Cinderella, sitting in third place, has also had a great run in Australia, bringing in three quarters of a million dollars in its fifth week on the charts. Three other family films help round out the top 10, while the remarkably unnecessary Paul Blart sequel – one of the worst reviewed films of the year according to Rotten Tomatoes  – was the highest grossing of the other new additions, which included the indie films The Age of Adaline and While We’re Young.

Avengers is expected to continue its domination this weekend, with the only major contender to enter the charts being Unfriended, which would be lucky to come in above third place. Though its ad campaign seems to pitch it in the Blair Witch world of indie horrors. Though they often do better than expected, its US figures keep us skeptical there, especially amongst the stiff competition.

All figures from The Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia and Box Office Mojo.
