West Coast legend Daz Dillinger recently confirmed to TMZ that the world will be seeing a “sequel” (or sorts) to Straight Outta Compton sooner rather than later, with work already kicking off for biopic that will continue into the early 90s through Snoop Dogg, 2Pac and the infamous Death Row Records.
UPDATE (23/08/15): Universal and Ice Cube have denied this rumour and reports remain unconfirmed.
While not technically “straight outta Compton”, both Snoop and 2Pac were important figures in the rise of West Coast rap so it makes sense, especially with the current film’s reception, that we continue to track the growth of gangster rap through two of the most iconic hip hop artists of all time. As of yet, there is no word who will actually be starring in the movie, but according to Daz, Ice Cube has already approved the project although he may not be involved.
Also said to feature prominently in the film is Tha Dogg Pound, the duo of Daz and Kurupt, who frequently collaborated with Snoop throughout his career and were stayed closely associated with 2Pac up until his murder in 1996.
Details surrounding the role of Suge Knight are also of interest, and though nothing has been confirmed yet, we wouldn’t be surprised if the co-founder of Death Row Records presents a few problems for the production further down the line, seeing as his lawyer thinks he won’t be happy with his portrayal in Straight Outta Compton.
Straight Outta Compton is in Australian cinemas from September 2nd
