A couple of new films have changed the box office landscape this week but the two from last week are back at it again, fighting for top spot.
Southpaw has usurped number 1, earning $1.3 million last week. Although it is only in its second week in Australia (as opposed to its 7th in The States) it still seems to be faring better. It has made a mere $49 million domestically while it has hovered around the top for 2 consecutive weeks here.
Vacation has dropped down a spot but still pulled in $1.3 million.
A handful of new titles have made their mark too.
Merryl Streep and Ricki and the Flash have debuted at 3rd spot coming up just short of a million.
Our very own Joel Edgerton’s directorial debut has earned $777,296 in its opening week. The Aussie is doing quite nicely for himself in The US, pulling up at 7th spot in his fourth week with a domestic gross of $36 million.
The other newbie is War Room, sneaking in at number 10. The religious drama earned a meager $260,947 here but shot to second position in America earning $11 million.
Just a quick milestone to mention too. Everyone’s favorite Minions have crossed the $1 billion dollar mark!
Not only is it the third animated film in history to do so (behind Frozen and Toy Story 3) but it also makes it a hat trick for Universal who have surpassed a billion 3 times this year. The other two of course are Furious 7 and Jurassic World.

This week sees the release of the N.W.A biopic Straight Out of Compton. Now it has been rolling in The States over the last couple of weeks, earning $60 million in its opening weekend. I’ll get down to the nitty gritty details next week but expect some solid numbers from the hip-hop drama.
