Australian Box Office Report: Straight Outta Compton is Straight Outta Competition

It’s been a slow few weeks at the box office. Despite a slew of new releases, none have really made a huge impact and its been 6 weeks since anything has broken $4 million.

Enter Straight Outta Compton, F. Gary Gray’s highly anticipated biopic on prolific hip-hop group N.W.A..

The Hip-Hop drama had a $60 million opening weekend in the states and an overall domestic gross of $150 million after 3 weeks.

In addition, it is now the most successful music biopic of all time, an honor previously held by the Johnny Cash centered Walk the Line. Add it to Universal’s already stellar year.

Everything else looks very similar.

Southpaw sticks around in second spot, pulling in another $712,667. Despite this, it is still only sitting on $51 million domestically.

Vacation and Ricki and The Flash battle it out at 3rd and 4th. They made $578,330 and $574,768, respectively while The Gift pulled in another half a million, rounding out the top 5.
