Australian Box Office Report: The Martian finds its home at top spot

The Martian is still rolling despite a handful of new entries at the box office last week. Pulling in another cool $3.1 million, The Martian is well on its way to becoming Ridley Scott’s most successful film. Sitting on US$143 million in the USA, it sits behind Hannibal (US$165 million) and Gladiator (US$187 million).

It is worth noting that although The Martian is on fire both here and in The States, it has been knocked off the top in the US. Goosebumps has debuted at top spot although it doesn’t open in Australia until Boxing Day. The Intern is proving to be a real hit too; The De Niro/Hathaway combo leading to another $1.1 million last week.

Some new films have put themselves on the map as well. Crimson Peak, Guillermo Del Toro’s newest rounds out the top 3 with $838k while Legend debuted at number 4 with $732k. The Walk, Robert Zemekis’ latest film came through at number 6, having just made over half a million. In the states however, it had a rather disappointing opening making a mere US$3.7 million and after 2 weeks, is yet to break US$10 million.
