Based on the award-winning stage show by Lawrence Leung, Sucker is a coming-of-age story that follows 18-year-old Lawrence as he embarks on a road trip with unusual characters and learns many life lessons along the way. Leung co-wrote the feature film adaptation with director Ben Chessell.
The film stars YouTube sensation John Luc (who has more than 2.3 million YouTube subscribers globally), rising star Lily Sullivan (Camp, Mental) and Timothy Spall (Harry Potter, Mr Turner). Other cast members include Jacek Koman, Kat Stewart and Shaun Micallef. A fresh take on a classic con tale, SUCKER is the first Australian feature film to cast a YouTube star in a lead role, and is loosely based on Leung’s late teenage years.
Synopsis:
When 18-year-old Lawrence is caught cheating on his final year math exam, he fails to get into medical school and is banished to stay at his goofy uncle’s house for the summer. By chance he meets ‘The Professor’- a colourful aging conman who invites Lawrence to join him and his sharp-tonged daughter Sarah on a road trip. As they make their way across the country (leaving suckers in their wake), Lawrence learns the ancient art of the swindle from the Professor and from Sarah he learns the truth about love.
