This Week’s DVD Picks: Break the Rules (11th December 2015)

This week’s DVD releases all feature kick-ass ladies who aren’t afraid to break the rules.

Iris

93-year-old Iris Apfel is a New York style icon, well-known for her flamboyant fashion sense and commitment to sartorial experimentation. Directed by renowned documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles (who, sadly, died six weeks before the release of his final film), a long-time friend of Apfel, Iris follows the stylist and interior designer, and follows the donation of many of her famous outfits to museums around the world. A stylish lady with gumption and an irreverence that’s endearing, Iris can be summed up in her own words: “I have no rules, because I would always be breaking them.”

Girls, Seasons 1-4

Speaking of women who break the rules, the ladies of Girls could certainly give Iris a run for her money. With the release of the fourth season of the HBO stalwart, you can grab the complete series boxed-set and watch Hannah, Jessa, Marnie, and Shoshanna deal with relationships, careers, family, marriage, sex, love, friendship. Despite the show losing its way in the middle, Girls has found a triumphant return to form with its fourth season.

Reign, Seasons 1-2

Evidently, Mary Queen of Scots was not a woman to be trifiled with. This historical drama series may be slightly fictionalised, but Reign nevertheless provides us with a look into the famous queen’s life. Starring Australian (and ex-Neighbours) actress Adelaide Kane and co-starring fellow Aussie Caitlin Stasey, Reign is more soap that docu-drama, but that doesn’t make it any less entertaining to watch.
