The first trailer for Baz Lurhmann’s Netflix music drama The Get Down has arrived

“Told through the lives and music of a ragtag crew of South Bronx teens, The Get Down is a mythic saga of the transformation of 1970s New York City.” This is the synopsis for the new Baz Luhrmann series coming to Netflix later this year. It’s set to take us into the music world of NYC in the 1970’s funk, disco and inevitably hip-hop burst onto the scene.

The first trailer for the series premiered today and showcases a stylish series, oozing with a mix of real life characters – like Grandmaster Flash – and fictional creations, like Boo-Boo (T.J. Brown Jr.), “a mechanically minded kid who is an irrepressible 40-year-old in a 14-year-old’s body”.

Thirteen one hour episodes have been produced and the series stars Jimmy Smits, Justice Smith, Herizen Guardiola, Shameik Moore, T.J. Brown Jr. and Skylan Brooks. Baz directs the series and co-created it with Shawn Ryan (The Shield).

The anticipated music drama is not the only of its genre to make a splash in 2016 – alongside the Australian director’s Netflix debut is a new HBO series from Martin Scorcese and Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger and Terence Winter (which premieres on Valentine’s Day), called Vinyl. And both follow in the footsteps of the success of the Fox series Empire.  Seems like there has never been a better time to get down, than right now…
