Given the social media excitement surrounding this Friends “reunion”, we at The Iris think it’s important to put it into perspective. This isn’t going to be some Curb Your Enthusiasm style reunion of brilliance – as they did in the series with the Seinfeld cast. This is just an interview for a special honouring sitcom director James Burrows, and there’s not even a guarantee that they’ll all be in the same room together!
NBC’s Robert Greenblatt has been quoted as telling reporters, “(We’re) hoping that all six of them will be in the same room at the same time, but I’m not sure we can logistically pull that off.”
Series co-producer Marta Kaufman has also always held by comments that the cast will never – ever – reunite for a scripted event. And this will be no exception.
But the special does promise to have interviews with all the members of the Friends cast – and more information should come to hand when they film the special later this month. It will then air on NBC in the US on February 21st.
Fans of the TV show Will and Grace should get themselves just as “excited”, however, as the cast of that classic sitcom will also be “reuniting” for the special – which Will and Grace actor Sean Hayes is producing.
So what makes Burrows worth celebrating? The Director recently notched off a pretty incredible milestone – his 1,000th TV episode. Burrows has been involved, at some point, with just about every great US sitcom in memory – Cheers, Will and Grace, Friends, Taxi, Frasier and NewsRadio to name but a few.
