EA continues is longstanding tradition of marching to the beat of its own rather odd drum, announcing today that they have released their booth space at this year’s E3 Expo in favour of holding an event of their own the weekend prior.
EA Play will be held at Club Nokia near the Anaheim Convention Centre on June 12, which is a Sunday in the States, and will run for three days. Unlike E3, the event will also be open to the public and a companion event will be held in London on the same weekend.
Not much else is known about the event at this stage other than that it will be an event filled with upcoming EA games for punters to get their hands on and that it will be free to enter, according to a report from Polygon.
Formerly one of the largest presences on the show floor at E3 each year, it will be interesting to see who inherits EA’s sizeable booth space and traditional Monday press conference slot. For now, we’re happy to speculate as to EA’s reasoning for the move.
Could be they be looking to parlay the event into a kind of BlizzCon-esque trade show/expo/eSports arena? Given reports that surfaced late last year of EA moving aggressively into the eSports world with a brand new Competitive Gaming Division, it wouldn’t surprise us one bit if that’s what they’ve got their eye on.
