After premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, Morris from America is screening at this year’s SXSW. Director Chad Hartigan’s third feature film tells the tale of an African-American boy who relocates to Germany with his single father. Larry had a chat to cast-members Craig Robinson and Markees Christmas about the film.
Larry: Congratulations on this film. Everyone’s been raving about your performance in the film.
Craig: Wow, thank you.
Now, tell me a little bit about what attracted you to be involved in this film. It’s a different sort of story you’re telling.
I was in this drama Get On Up, the James Brown story, so it’s not exactly the first but it’s definitely the deepest I’ve gone into the dramatic category and to spread my wings this way has been such a blessing, with people raving like you said. It’s so exciting to kind of tip my hat and come out this way.
Would you move to Germany after this film?
I will have a place in Berlin, put it like that, are you kidding me? Yes.
I’m really excited to see this film. What attracted you to be a part of it?
Markees: Um, I relate to Morris in a few ways as far as the relationship between him and his father and his love for rap music and, yeah, that’s what really drew me to the story. Yeah, I kind of fell in love with the script and I was just looking forward to shooting it.
Then you found out you got to go to Germany and you know…
Yeah, I found that I get to go to Germany. I thought it was just going to be like a regular studio movie where we shoot inside of a studio, and we’re not really going to Germany but, yeah, we’re going to Germany and it felt great to go out of the country for the first time.
That’s one way to do it, one way to see the world. Well I can’t wait to see the film and thank you very much for your time.
