Tesla’s Model 3 was unveiled today, promising to be the first affordable electric car available in Australia.
The unveiling of the Model 3 was held at the company’s design studio in Hawthorne, California.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the car would be one of the safest to drive in the world.
Musk said the car will deliver at least 215 miles of range – approximately 346 kilometres per charge, and pricing would begin at US$35,000 – Tesla’s most affordable car yet.
Tesla’s high-speed Supercharging network will support all Model 3 cars. Musk said in relation to this, – “it’s about going where you want to go.”.
Tesla promises that by the end of 2017, there will be a total of 7,200 Superchargers available.
The Model 3 will be available in both all-wheel and rear-wheel drive versions. The car’s interior boasts a 15-inch landscape touchscreen.
Musk emphasised that Model 3 is far more spacious than other petrol-based vehicles available, offering its passengers a comfortable driving and travel experience. There will also be storage room at the rear and front of the car.
“Comfortably is the important part here,” said Musk.
The car will include autopilot safety features which will allow them to avoid collisions by steering themselves.
According to Tesla’s tracker at the event, pre-orders for the Model 3 have already surged past the 150,000 mark.
