It’s been reported that Johnny Depp will be the star of the upcoming film by Brett Ratner The Libertine.
With a script written by Ben Kopit, the title has been inspired by french diplomat Dominique Strauss-Kahn‘s (Depp) story of how he was accused of sexual assault and was put under house arrest.
In 2011, Strauss-Kahn had to resign from his managing director position for the International Monetary Fund due to allegations made of him assaulting a hotel maid. Eventually he was placed under house arrest but the case fell through as there was lack of physical evidence between Strauss-Kahn and the maid. A later civil suit was actioned out of court.
The people of Warner Bros. originally picked up Kopit’s spec script in August last year, however, the project is now being bought by foreign buyers in Cannes with several sales agents circulating.
Strauss-Kahn’s story has been used for another film as inspiration in Abel Ferrara‘s Welcome to New York. The film was showcased in Cannes with Gerard Depardieu undertaking the lead role.
Depp has a couple of projects along the way with roles in Disney’s Alice Looking Through Glass out this month and Pirates of the Carrabean: Dead Man No Tales later down the line.
Meanwhile, Ratner recently directed 2014’s Hercules, starring Dwayne Johnson.
