Audiences haven’t let their love for Nemo and Dory fade it would seem, as the sequel to 2003’s smash Finding Nemo tears up the box office.
Finding Dory has taken some $25 million since its release last month, after it enjoyed the highest grossing opening week for a Disney animated film in Australia (around $13 million).
“The story and characters of the first film connected so strongly with Australian audiences and we’re really excited to be able to reunite fans with Dory after all this time” said Kylie Watson-Wheeler, Managing Director for The Walt Disney Company AUNZ.
It isn’t only in Australia either. Finding Dory also became the highest grossing opening weekend of all time in the US for an animated film. And it broke several records in its second weekend, smashing big budget rival Independence Ray: Resurgence, as it did in Australia. It’s expected to fetch a third consecutive #1 weekend in the US in spite of incoming competition from The BFG and the anticipated Legend of Tarzan. Right now its international tally sits somewhere around the US$430 million mark.
