The USA is well into their summer, so blockbuster after blockbuster have been trotted out, both here and internationally, while Australian audiences delight in getting great content as we freeze our butts off.
Matt Damon‘s new action-venture, Jason Bourne, has just made it through its first weekend in Australia and it’s already done well over the previous week’s newest release, Star Trek Beyond (making this week its second week in theatres). It also did similarly well in the USA, where it was the second largest opening for a Bourne franchise. The Bourne Ultimatum, released in 2007, holds the record for the largest opening for a Bourne franchise at USD $69 million.
Interestingly, Andre Rieu’s 2016 Maastricht Concert is not that far behind in box office takings from the 2nd spot on the table. Considering it only came out this week and contains no fight scenes, espionage or Vulcans, it’s done exceptionally well. Sheesh.
Ghostbusters has dropped two spots on the ladder this week from 2nd to 4th, but seems to be hanging in the top five spot at $1.3 million, amid racist and sexist remarks aimed at one of its leading actors, Leslie Jones.
The Legend of Tarzan has been booted out of its top 3 spot on the box office ladder, making only $654K this week and dropping to number 6 on the ladder. However, at 4 weeks in theatres, the film has made AU$11 million, helping its international total cross the US$300 million mark.
There will probably be more of a shake-up of this ladder when Margot Robbie‘s other other film, Suicide Squad, releases on 4th August. Judging by reactions from advanced screenings in the USA, it looks like it’s going to give Jason Bourne and the crew of the of the U.S.S Enterprise a run of their money.
