OK, as we’ve already reported on Suicide Squad breaking opening day box office records, it should be no surprise that it sits at the top of the leaderboard on the Australian Box Office , knocking rogue former CIA agent Jason Bourne off the number one spot after just one week. Suicide Squad made a massive AU $13,904,557 since its release last week, which is 55% of the top 20 box office takings.
The success in Australia mirrors its record breaking numbers in the USA, with the biggest August opening of all time – US$135.1 million – across its opening weekend.
Jason Bourne, although dropping to the number 2 spot on the ladder, remains steady in at least the top 5, however it’s got nothing on Will Smith and Co. Taking only AU $3.5 million this week, it’s combined box office takings (of AU $13.5) is still behind Suicide Squad, despite it being in cinemas for two weeks.
New to the ladder, and impressively debuting at number three, is everyone’s favourite middle-aged ratchet duo of Patsy Stone and Edina Monsoon with their long awaited Absolutely Fabulous movie. With a week 1 taking of AU $2.7 million, it’s made a pretty good showing considering their last episode was produced in 2012.
