Australian Box Office Report: Bridget Jones’s Baby becomes fave kid this week

In its first full week of release, Bridget Jones’s Baby has nabbed top spot, claiming $3.68 million at the box office.  Only just beating the film at no. 2, the Renee Zellweger flick has also reportedly yielded the lowest screen average (that is, the average amount earned across the number of screens/venues a movie is shown) for a new release at the top spot on the box office ladder since Alice Through The Looking Glass, which took $2.99 million in late May.

The Secret Life Of Pets, previously at no. 1, has dropped – just – to second place, taking $3.51 million at the box office.  This basically means that the top 3 places on this week’s box office ladder have done a bit of a cinematic shuffle, with Sully, previously at no. 2, taking third spot this week with $2.13 million.

Suicide Squad is doing a remarkable job at holding onto a spot on the box office ladder, hanging in there at no. 10 with $261k, tHough it dropped from 7th place last week.  Similarly, Sausage Party, which was last week’s no. 10, has dropped significantly to no. 16.

New entrants to the box office table this week include Pete’s Dragon and Blair Witch.  Pre-empting the school holiday period, Pete’s Dragon took the number 4 spot with $992k, and may rise, or a least stay, in the top 10 thanks to the kids.  Blair Witch at number 5 with $708k earnings may drop down the ladder soon due to spotty reviews. Eight Days a Week, meanwhile, had a strong performance on limited screens, with The Beatles documentary’s one week limited release entering it at number 6.

Upcoming films include Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (a film adaptation of the Young Adult fiction novel by Ransom Riggs) and the remake of Magnificent Seven, which stars Chris Pratt and Denzel Washington, and looks all kinds of wonderful.
