Australian Box Office Report: The Girl on the Train remains steady in the no. 1 spot

It seems many are still willing to take a thrilling ride (sorry) with Emily Blunt and Co., as The Girl On The Train retained its top spot on at the box office this week, earning $2.61 million.  Although the earnings were down by 35% since last week, this film still managed the best revenue retention of any film in the top 10 list, a solid result for a slightly slow weekend at the movies.

However, Tom Hanks’ latest release, Inferno, managed to pique the interest of enough people to make some noise on the ladder, coming in at no. 2 and earning $2.20 million.  The Dan Brown film adaptation opened on 384 screens, which was the most for any movie from the weekend.

No movement on the box office ladder, though, for Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, which, at no. 3 again this week, took in only $969 thousand, a 55% decrease in earnings since last week.

Deepwater Horizon took a bit of a dive away from the top spot this week, dropping from no. 2 to no. 4 with earnings this week of $940 thousand, 45% down from last week.  The Magnificent Seven was also down this week, dropping from 3rd to 5th spot this week, earning just $721k, a 48% drop since last week.

New to the Box Office Report is Masterminds, making its debut at no 6 this week.  Starring comedy bigwigs like Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig and Zach Galifianakis, it made $612k and is the only film aside from Inferno that were new to the top 10 list.

Next week’s Australian Box Office report should see some mention of Tom Cruise’s new film Jack Reacher: Never Go Back anext the horror (just in time for Halloween) Ouija: Origin of Evil.
