The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is bringing IRL Sweet Rolls to Sydney (and your kitchen)

When Bethesda’s epic The Elder Scrolls V: Skyim was first released in 2011 it came to no one’s surprise that the video game almost immediately hit cult classic status; it remains as loved to this day. The impressively vast, cleverly paced, and wondrously engaging action RPG has become a cultural touchstone, reaching a point very few games these days can boast. It makes sense that the dominant publishers would then want to do some playful promotions to coincide with the release of the game’s new-gen remake, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition, and for Sydney, Australia they’ve tapped some of the best damn bakers around, Bourke Street Bakery, to recreate the game’s famed Sweet Rolls.

A Sweet Roll is one of the best known items in The Elder Scrolls universe, dating all the way back to the very first game in the series. They look like mini volcanic sugar hits, and the expert team at Bourke Street Bakery seek to recreate these pastries faithfully with their own twist, and their own recipe. We all know Sweet Rolls are made from a straight forward mix of milk, flour, butter, eggs, and salt, and that’s pretty much what the recipe below is made up of, but the ingredients and measurements are a bit more refined.

In case you didn’t already know, the upcoming Special Edition of Skyrim is brimming with add-ons and a few new features such as remastered art and effects, volumetric god rays, dynamic depth field, screen-space reflections, new quests, more environments, extra characters, and of course more weapons and armour. There will also be a creation kit for mods on all platforms.

The new version of Skyrim will be released in Australia this Friday 28th October, so for the weekend Bourke Street Bakery plan to give their Sweet Rolls to gamers and sugar fiends alike, in-store, for free. On Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th, anyone will be able to head along to any of their eleven Sydney stores from 10am to grab and digest a piece of Elder Scrolls. All you’ve gotta do is ask for one (they won’t be on public display to ensure those who really want one, get one).

Thousands of Sweet Rolls will be available but they’ll be available on a first come, first serve basis with a strict limit of one per customer per day. Just take note that all Bourke St Bakery products may contain traces of flour, sesame seeds, soy, tree nuts, olive pips, and gluten. For any updates you can follow the bakery on Facebook.

SO. What if you want to whip up a batch of these bad boys yourself, you ask? No worries, here’s the step-by-step:

Sweet Roll Recipe

Note: Makes approx 6 x 100g Sweet Rolls. You will need a table top mixer, muffin tray, paper cones, and rice.

Ingredients

Hi Protein Flour: 540mg
Butter (Unsalted): 270mg
Salt: 10mg
Milk: 190ml
Brown Sugar: 85ml
Yeast: 20mg
Beaten Eggs: 155mg

Method

1. Place flour, sugar, salt, milk & yeast into your mixer. Start mixing on a slow setting and add in half your beaten eggs, one at a time. Once the ingredients have been mixed thoroughly, switch to a faster setting and wait for your dough to combine before adding the other half of your beaten eggs. Keep mixing until the batter is nice and smooth and the dough has got tension. Touch it with a finger and see if it sticks but pulls back into shape.

2. Switch back to slow speed, add the softened butter and mix on slow until well combined, finish off with a brief mixing in second speed and your dough is ready.

3. Leave it in your refrigerator overnight or for a minimum of 8 hours to allow the butter to set within the structure of the dough. No amount of magic can speed up the process!

4. The following day divide your dough into 100 gram thick strings (flatten them into a rectangle shape then roll while spreading your hands out), wrap them up in a circle to form a doughnut shape. Make sure to do this on a bit of flour so the dough doesn’t stick.

5. Place the little doughnut in the muffin pan, insert the cone, fill with rice, prove for up to 3 hours then put the top tray on, fill with rice and place in the oven to bake at 180 for 35 minutes.

6. Once baked take out of the oven, remove tray cones, and remove sweet roll from the pans. Cool down and ice.

Ingredients

Icing sugar: 110gm
Glucose: 125gm
Water: 15gm
Gelatine leaf: 1/2

Method

1. Sift the icing sugar into the mixing bowl. Bring the glucose and water just to the boil, take off the heat immediately.

2. Stir in your soaked gelatine leaf. Start mixing the icing sugar with the paddle on low speed and slowly pour in the glucose.

3. When it is all combined, increase the speed to medium (low/medium if possible i.e. 3-4 out of 10) and mix until room temperature.
