5 films you can’t miss during this weekend’s Monster Fest in Melbourne

The highly anticipated Monster Fest begins today at Melbourne’s Lido Cinemas and will be running until November 27. Jam-packed with insightful Q&A events and films to choose from, this festival has a little something for everyone. We have chosen 5 films you should see at Monster Fest to make the most of your experience.

The Puppetman (short)

Slasher films more of your thing? USA short film The Puppetman explores the story of a group of friends having a few cheeky drinks at an isolated bar. Although the casual night of fun proposes some normality, The Puppetman is an ode to 70s horror movies.

The Man Who Caught The Mermaid (short)

A senior fisherman finds himself obsessed with catching a mermaid. Unlike others, he’s gone through long preparation and has undergone extensive training to live life in the sea. Suddenly, everything has changed for him. Described as “fantastical and hard-hitting”, this short managed to win a Platinum Remi at Worldfest Houston. If you’re after something strange yet cinematic, you shouldn’t give this a miss!

Beyond The Gates

Directed by Jackson Stewart, Beyond The Gates explores the story of two brothers. After their father goes missing, both have planned to liquidate his assets within the video store he owns. The pair discover a VCR board game their father played and stumble upon the last video he viewed. Through their curiosity, the brothers discover that these may lead to a more sinister world.

RAW

What’s a vegetarian’s worst nightmare? Being forced to eat meat of course! This French film explores the consequences of a young vegetarian who accidentally finds themselves part of a carnivorous ritual. If you’re looking for something “controversial” and “stomach-churning”, RAW is your go-to.

Dead Hands Dig Deep

Making its premiere in Victoria, this documentary was made by 19-year old Sydney filmmmaker, Jai Love. The title focuses on Edwin Borsheim who is known for his wrestling antics, onstage mutilation and fronting extreme metal band Kettle Cadaver. If you’re looking for something heartfelt with a twist of grimness, Dead Hands Dig Deep is another title to add to the list!
