If you can hear a faint screaming or wailing in the distance, don’t be alarmed, it’s just the collective sound of Cumberbabes and BBC Sherlock fans all collectively freaking out over the new trailer that has arrived for Season 4.
BBC One has officially dropped the full length trailer for Series 4 of Sherlock and it’s pretty dark and ominous. But it’s the last few seconds of it that has fans in a flurry.
It begins with Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Dr John Watson (Martin Freeman) looking particularly concerned whilst Mycroft Holmes (Mark Gatiss) in voiceover tells us “the roads we walk have demons beneath them, and yours have been waiting for a very long time”. So even from the first few moments we can tell that this season is already treading into foreboding territory.
But it ups the ante with the appearance of Culverton Smith (Toby Jones) who will be this seasons villain. “What’s the very worst thing you can do, to your very best friends … tell them your darkest secret”, apparently challenging Sherlock to reveal his secrets to those he trusts most. One of which might possibly be a declaration of love as we see Holmes staring down the barrel of the camera saying “I love you” at the very end.
Now of course, as we know from watching many a trailer, it’s hard to discern exactly what is going on. As a lot of the imagery and voiceovers we hear are actually edited and pulled from all three episodes spanning the season. So basically, we don’t really know what’s going on, we just know that shit got real heavy and it’s going to be one of those seasons that probably ruins us all emotionally.
BBC Sherlock which was created by Stephen Moffatt and Mark Gatiss (who also stars as Mycroft) has been renowned for making episodic mini series that are basically miniature films which is why there’s usually a long wait between seasons. We had the singular The Abominable Bride at the start of 2016. A mind-bending trip of Sherlock and Watson dipping into the Victorian era and solving a mystery, which it turns out was all in Holmes’ mind palace. But with both Cumberbatch and Freeman being Hollywood A-listers now, time is a precious commodity. And in a recent issue of British GQ magazine Cumberbatch has said “it feels like the end of an era” and was possibly eluding to Season 4 being the last for Sherlock. However he did add in that even if the series were to continue, this new season “goes to a place where it will be pretty hard to follow on immediately”.
We can only wait and see if the show continues, we’d like to hope so. In the meantime, Australian fans can watch the first episode of Season 4 titled ‘The Six Thatchers’ on streaming service Stan Australia on 2 January 2017.
