Australian Box Office Report: Kong: Skull Island proves king of the box office over Marvel for another week

It appears there’s no stopping the mighty King Kong, as Kong: Skull Island topped the box office for the second week in a row, earning $3.13m. The number of screens this film is available (nationally) has dropped from 523 last week to 395 this week, so we might see this one slip a little after the coming weekend.

The other other big film, Logan, remained at no. 2 again this week, earning $2.88m at the box office. It remains on a little over 400 screens nationally.

Not much movement for the no. 3 spot either, as Hidden Figures remains steady in 3rd place, earning $1.06m this week. It has now made $15m in the five weeks it has been in cinemas.

A funny thing happened on the way to no. 4 this week though. Last week’s 4th place was Lion, and this week, in her first film debut, sitting pretty behind the top 3 on the box office, is Peppa Pig My First Cinema Experience: Peppa’s Australian Holiday. If you’ve not been around a person under the age of 7 in the past, ohh, decade or so, then this will seem like an anomaly. But she’s pretty popular with the tiny tots, and Peppa Pig made $814k at the box office in its opening week, making it the best performer of the premieres.

Lion is still performing strongly, still managing a top 5 spot on the box office ladder, making $533k this week. If it continues to perform, it will reach an overall total sales of $29m during the week. As a comparison, Happy Feet made $31.78m overall.

This weekend sees the premiere of the live action Beauty and the Beast (it will be odd to see Ewan McGregor as both a talking candlestick and a former drug addict in T2:Trainspotting), which will probably bring in a large audience and knock the top 2 films about a little bit.
