Australian Box Office Report: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 leaves Fate of the Furious behind

It’s no surprise that the highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 performed so well.  The first film, which opened in 2014, became the 6th best grossing film of its year.  The sequel took in $8.61m in this week, but advance screenings went way back to the Anzac Day opening last week, so its actual total earnings are $15.68m.  This number, naturally, is expected to climb, and the Marvel film will be a stayer in the top 3 for weeks to come.

This means that it edged out previous no. 1, The Fate of the Furious,  to downgrade to no.2 on the box office ladder this week. The film made $1.71m in its 3rd week in cinemas, with a 65% drop in ticket sales.

The Star Lord’s arrival at the box office has also meant that some of the magic may be wearing off for Beauty and the Beast,  which made $855k this week and dropped from no. 2 to no. 3 on the box office ladder.  It’s the first time the film made less than a $1m since its opening in March. In the 6 weeks since its cinematic release, it had remained steady in the top 2, and has earned a massive $44.48m to date.

Previous no. 3 The Boss Baby took a pretty noticeable nosedive this week, and is now at no. 7, earning $482k.  Going in Style was beaten out of its no. 4  spot ( earning $832k) to Bollywood action/adventure film Baahubali 2: The Conclusion ($571k).

Next week, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword starring Charlie Hunnam and directed by Guy Ritchie, and Amy Schumer’s new comedy Snatched, which also stars Goldie Hawn, and is of no relation to an earlier film of Richie’s, should make an appearance somewhere on the top 10 list.

Get Out, comedian Jordan Peele’s directorial debut, also opens this weekend. It became the highest grossing film in the USA directed by a black filmmaker, an accolade previously held by F. Gary Gray’s Straight Outta Compton. It also famously earned a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Our own reviewer gave it a glowing report.
