The last movie of the franchise was Hellboy II The Golden Army was released in 2008 and critically successful (RT 85%). Whether or not this reboot can successfully return the property to the spotlight, amongst major comic book movie franchises already in full swing, remains to be seen. With the succes of R-Rated blockbusters like Logan and Deadpool, it appears there is significant demand for films that are more adult and fall more outside the typical superhero genre.
Hellboy was originally created in 1993 by Mignola for multiple mini-series and comic books by Dark Horse Comics. Hellboy is a demon brought to earth by an occult Nazi ceremony during the Second World War. He soon becomes Earth’s unlikely defender while resisting his innate infernal impulses.
