Australian Box Office Report: Kingsman debuts in golden spot

Kingsman: The Golden Circle made a phenomenal debut at the box office, taking in $5.71m and sitting in top spot this week.  This cinema debut was the best since It opened with $7.46m.  Kingsman: The Golden Circle also managed a screen average of a whopping $14,116 across 405 screens.

Still hot over the weekend was It, earning $2.41m and sitting in 2nd place.  It has made $18.61m since it made its mark in cinemas three weeks ago.

This week, The Emoji Movie dropped from 2nd to 3rd place, earning $1.55m at the box office.  With the school holidays here, it’s got every chance of staying in the top 5 for a few more weeks.  It has made $4.68m since it opened last weekend.

Last week’s 3rd place film,  Victoria And Abdul, now sits at no. 4 on the box office ladder, earning $1.30m this week.  It also garnered a screen average of $4,120.

Thanks to the school holidays, last week’s 8th place film,  Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, shot up the box office ladder to 5th place.  It made $966,000 and again, will probably be quite popular with the kiddies in the coming weeks.

In Australian feature film news, Mountain, directed by Australian BAFTA-nominated director Jennifer Peedom, sits at no. 12 on the box office ladder, and made $100,264 from 30 screens, including a screen average of $3,342 nationally. The film showcases our neverending fascination with mountains, and Peedom herself said, “It is certainly a unique offering, indicating that audiences have an appetite for this kind of immersive and musical cinematic experience”. The documentary film also features Richard Tognetti and the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO), cinematographer Renan Ozturk and writer Robert MacFarlane, with narration by Willem Dafoe.

Mountain is the most successful Australian documentary of the year to date and the highest grossing non-IMAX documentary of the year, local or international.  It will screen at the San Sebastian Film Festival on Friday 29th September, then at the BFI London Film Festival.
