With the recent success the DC Universe project Wonder Woman, which took in $822 million at the worldwide box office, it’s no surprise that a sequel was quickly green-lit. Starring model and actress Gal Gadot (Fast Five) in the titular role, today we have our first taste of the film, confirmed to be called Wonder Woman 1984, as cameras roll on production. With the first images showing us Gal and Chris Pine back in action in a shopping mall, the film is set to take us from the trenches of the First World War all the way to the glitter and glam of the 1980’s.
The next film in the franchise sees Wonder Woman pitted against a new villain, known as The Cheetah, who will be portrayed by well known comedic actor Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids). Acclaimed director Patty Jenkins will also return to helm the film. In an interesting twist, actor Chris Pine (Star Trek) will also return as Steve Trevor.
Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, Patty Jenkins, Stephen Jones and Gal Gadot are producing the film, while Rebecca Roven Oakley, Richard Suckle, Wesley Coller, Geoff Johns and Walter Hamada will serve as executive producers.
With production to take place in various locations such as Washington, D.C., Alexandria, Virginia, and in the UK, Spain and the Canary Islands, Wonder Woman 1984 is set to open on theatres 31 October 2019 in Australia and New Zealand. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
In the meantime, two other DC Extended Universe films will drop between now and then – Aquaman starring Jason Momoa hits cinemas in December, and Shazam!, starring Zachary Levi, is due out in April.
