Sam Smith is still one of the most anticipated voices in music today, gleaming with a dulcet, soulful tone that has him easily accenting emotions that contemporaries may struggle to capture. A good demonstration of that is his newly released cover of Amy Winehouse ballad “Love is a Losing Game”, which debuted this past week on Annie MAc’s BBC Radio 1 show.
“I saw the film [Amy] recently and, sometimes, people forget my age”, Smith said on the show. “I was 11 years old when Frank came out…that album has really shaped me as an artist and my views on music and my relationship with music lyrically.”
The cover was recorded during the sessions for Drowning Shadows, the reissue of his debut album. It’s release follows the debut of the title track just the other week, which Smith has described as “the saddest song I’ve ever written”. Listen to both songs below.
