For Banoffee, aka singer songwriter Martha Brown, 2015 was her year to break out on to the music radars of many fans and industry folk around the country. Her second EP, Do I Make You Nervous?, reached out to more fans last year with an incredible tour in tow and to wrap up, Banoffee brought her cool signature sound and style to the Falls Festival.
Following her set up in the Grand Theatre tent at Mt. Duneed, Banoffee hung out with us, chatting about her involvement in a number of charitable projects, including the Hands Down Project – raising awareness for the Domestic Violence Resource Centre for Victoria.
“I think it’s really nice to be invited to play those shows,” she says. “Being a musician, I don’t do anything particularly helpful for anyone else, it’s not particularly life-changing work. It’s really nice to be able to get on board a charity when you can, just to feel like you’re doing something and making some change. Especially with the Hands Down Project; I though, run by two girls who really hadn’t put anything on before, it was a very important cause. It was really lovely.”
She describes her relationship with the Melbourne based Good Manners crew and the way they have continued to foster her creativity and a nurturing musical environment to work in.
“It’s really lovely. I’m not with Good Manners Records, but I’m under Good Manners Management and it’s just nice to be a part of a community of people who aren’t trying to make money out of you and are just in it for the art of it and to be creative and to make new things. It’s been really lovely, especially because I came from Two Bright Lakes, which is a small artist-run label; it was like a little transition, I didn’t want to go into the big, bad music industry too full on!”
Along with her music and other commitments, Banoffee is also exploring her interest in fashion, prepping a line of her own to be released in a few months.
“It’s generally stuff I have wanted to find and can’t find.” she says of the clothes. “I’m like, ‘I’m going to make this, I’ve always wanted to wear it’. Really comfortable clothing, pretty gender-neutral and pretty easy to wear – a lot of fun. That’ll be coming out in March.”
