What music or artists inspired you?
We’re influenced by musical improvisation/happy accidents and lean towards noise, fragility and repetition. Melody is pretty important to us, and there is a pop side to what we do, even if buried. We’re all pretty impassioned and opinionated about music, so our dislike of certain bands/genres may be the biggest influence in steering us towards what we do. That said, Neu, Can and Yo La Tengo are all pretty constant with the four of us.
As an Australian, I’ve been heavily influenced by The Necks, Oren Ambarchi, Underground Lovers, 1993-1998 Magic Dirt, My Disco, The Paradise Motel, Raven, Lawrence English; anything on Room 40.
How did things get started?
Brad had a solo show booked and decided he wished to bring in other people to include on the performance. Jon, Andy and myself met for the first time as we were setting up our gear on stage. We played a set of improvised music and were happy with how it turned out, so we then met to record five hours of improvised music a few months later. Brad and I then spent the next year and a half editing and adding, turning the pieces into our first album (I).
How would you best describe your live show?
Loud, noisy, smoke-machined. Sometimes extraordinarily good, sometimes horrifically bad!
What shows do you have coming up?
We’re just finishing up a hiatus whilst our bass player, Andy, has been touring with his other band, Born Ruffians. They’ll be more shows coming soon. Keep an eye on Facebook for more dates.
Tell us about your latest release:
Our new record (WON) features collaborations with Damian Abraham (Fucked Up), Carmen Elle (Diana) and Brad Weber (Caribou). It’s both more melodic and noisier than our first record (I), and more accessible. We were keen to take both sides of the band as far as we could go with it.
