SXSW Music Interview: Matt Gresham (WA) on his upcoming EP, writing in LA & more!

Bringing some excellent examples of songwriting and a wickedly endearing live presence out to Austin for SXSW this year was WA artist Matt Gresham. Currently in the process of finishing up an EP that we’re eager to hear, Gresham tells Larry about the writing and recording process that had him fall in love with LA and hit The Grove with Scott Horscroft to record.

“The place definitely has a very music vibe,” Gresham says of his time in LA. “The vibe’s good there for me. Definitely LA over New York because I can surf in LA; the waves in California are amazing for surfing…maybe it’s just the surfing that’s the main reason!”

“I’ve got a new single, “Small Voices”, that’s out and it’s going really well.” he says. “The songs [on the EP] are already all written; we did the songwriting in LA a few months ago with a guy named James Young. We’re just putting it together with a good producer and it’s wicked. I love recording, man. For me, that’s where it’s at. ”

Gresham describes performing at SXSW with a band of new players (as well as playing solo shows) as having kept him on his toes, too.

“I feel like the band, they’re so much better than me at playing!” he laughs. “They’re such great players, so when you situate yourself with players who are better than you are, it’s the best thing. It’s like with any sport, with skateboarding it’s the same thing; if you skate with skaters who are better than you, you’re going to get better. It’s a growth for me, man, for sure.”
