This week in the music industry: the Worldwide Independent Network (WIN) released their market report on the global performance of independent record labels in 2015 and fraud tickets for Dark Mofo are allegedly circulating the internet.

Worldwide Independent Market Report

For the first time ever, the Worldwide Independent Network (WIN) has been able to extract the true market share values of independent record labels based on ownership, in their 2015 market report. Traditionally, market value measurements have been based on the standard of distribution numbers.

Released on Friday June 3rd 2016, the report indicated that the global independent record label market was worth AU$7.6 billion in 2015, with 37.6% of its shares based on rights ownership. The gradual growth in streaming was also evident in the report, with  Australian independent label shares of all streaming at 39% while physical sales were 35% and downloads at 36%.

Founded in 2006, WIN is a representative organisation for the worldwide independent label community. The full market report can be found HERE.

Fraud ticket warnings  for Dark Mofo

On Wednesday, the organisers of Dark Mofo, the annual festival of art, food, film, and music  held in Hobart, released a warning on fraud tickets. Earlier in the week, organisers received reports of fraud tickets for the festival, allegedly priced at $200 per ticket,  circulating online.

The festival’s Creative Director Leigh Carmichael said “Dark Mofo and Mona are the only place to purchase tickets to our events, and we can’t guarantee the validity of tickets purchased through any other channels”.
