Melbourne Music Week has begun teasing us with some gems ahead of the event’s full program announcement in October with news of key headliners and the new festival hub today. Melbourne’s Lord Mayor, Robert Doyle, has announced that one of the city’s iconic sites, the historic State Library Victoria, will be the Hub for MMW this year, the landmark celebrating 160 years in 2016.
“State Library Victoria is a perfect backdrop for this year’s Melbourne Music Week Hub.” the Lord Mayor has said. “It will provide a unique experience inside one of the city’s most recognisable buildings and reinvent the space from its traditional use into a vibrant live music venue.”
For Melbourne Music Week, the State Library’s original reading room, Queen’s Hall, will host many of the main performances as it’ll act as the main performance space in the Hub. The La Trobe Reading Room will also host events and performances, while the Forecourt will host DJ sets, performances and food each day of MMW from 10am-10pm.
Three special headline events have been unveiled for MMW this year too; the first is a fantastic celebration of women in Australian music, titled Her Sound, Her Story: A Celebration of Women in Music. Premiering on the Opening Night of MMW (November 11th), the showcase will include Julia Stone, Ecca Vandal, Ella Hooper, Mama Kin and Mojo Juju paying homage to female pioneering voices through Australian music. Inspired by noted photographer Michelle Grace Hunder and filmmaker Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore, the original visual collaboration explores the lives and careers of some of Australia’s most influential female artists. The performance for MMW will feature extended sets by Mojo Juu and Elizabeth Rose.
The second event announced by Melbourne Music Week today is a special performance by The Drones at the Melbourne Town Hall on November 13th. Performing tunes from their latest acclaimed effort, Feelin’ Kinda Free, as well as cuts from across their impressive back catalogue, The Drones will also play the venues famed Grand Organ and will be supported by My Disco. The show marks the first time a Victorian band will have headlined the showcased the event at the Town Hall – pretty special!
The final MMW nugget of greatness is news that the MCG will also be transformed into the mini-festival, LOVE LIVE MUSIC at the ‘G, come November 13th. An array of Melbourne musicians including The Delta Riggs and Pierce Brothers will be performing, while punters will be able to wander the stands and normally off-limits locations (change rooms, Robert Flower Terrace etc).
