Baby Blue, born as a solo project for vocalist Rhea Caldwell, has matured into a trio that is rising through the ranks of Melbourne’s music scene. Guitarist Fabian Hunter brings a cool finesse that cements this band in the guitar-pop scene, with drummer Nathanael Riley tying the trio together.
The trio’s third single, “Save Yourself”, described by Rhea as ‘a song I wrote after I had been trying to help someone through a hard time for a long time. After months of advice and being their shoulder, I had the realisation that nothing I could do or say would help them, they needed to do it on their own.’
Although perhaps not the most uplifting lyrical content, this song embodies summer. It’s modern surf-pop, with glorious vocal harmonies and jaunty guitar. Rhea’s voice is captivating, blissfully weaving her story in a manner reminiscent of folk singers; she has an ear for velvety melodies. There’s even a few sneaky tongue-in-cheek Beach Boy harmonies between the trio. I need a beer and a beach umbrella, this song is too sunny.
I caught the trio when they supported Chastity Belt at The Curtin, and their live show does not disappoint – they’re launching ‘Save Yourself’ on October 21st at The Old Bar, w/ Poppongene, Ferla and Jade Imagine (solo). Escape this dreary Melbourne springtime for Baby Blue’s summery, 60s-esque rock, at what is sure to be an entrancing evening.
