Spit Syndicate enter the final leg of their national album tour for One Good Shirt Had Us All Fly, with shows in Adelaide and Perth coming up this weekend. The tour has seen Nick Lupi and Jimmy Nice hit stages with fellow One Day comrades Jackie Onassis, bringing together two of Oz Hip Hop’s finest for shows dripping in confidence and stylistic flair.
Speaking with Lupi ahead of the shows this weekend, he opens up about how the tour has treated the SpitSyndicate crew thus far.
“Honestly, it feels unbelievable,” he says. “These shows have somehow exceeded the expectations that we had. We’ve done a few tours over the past year or so and we’ve been road-testing some of the new album songs prior to it dropping, but this is our first headline tour since releasing the album so I guess there is a sense of excitement around the album which we’re definitely feeling in terms of energy at these shows!”
“Performing “Darling Street” with Thelma Plum for the first time was pretty special, we’ve also performed “Mum” with our mothers in the room at two different shows, someone gave us some home-made salami in Brisbane from their family farm. Like I said, it’s been unbelievable.”
On the release and reception One Good Shirt…has received, Lupi remains humble about the hustle; commenting on the process behind making the album and seeing it translate live to fans and newcomers alike.
“We’ve thrown everything we’ve got into our music, in a figurative, emotional sense and also in a real, financial and time sense,” he laughs. “We took our time crafting our latest album and we’ve been blown away by the response to it. I guess the live sphere is the best way of properly gauging the response; you can hear and feel people engaging with the songs in a way that no amount of Facebook likes and Instagram comments can do.”
“Our live show has evolved a bit since we first started playing shows and the current show is easily our strongest with the addition of live instruments; one thing that’s been constant has been our energy. We’ve always tried to go in, there’s no shoe-gazing ’round here.”
With the tour finishing up this weekend, Spit Syndicate aren’t stopping. New music is already in the pipeline and with the One Day party train continuing to produce and deliver some of the east coast’s biggest block parties, there’s plenty keeping Lupi and Jimmy Nice busy.
“We’re working on a new project but are keeping pretty quiet about it for now.” he admits. “We’re on a roll at the moment creatively and keen to keep it moving!”
