In sophomore EP release Rebel Mindtricks, Sydney’s proclaimed ‘Discopunk Rainbowrock’ purveyours Borneo released some of their finest and most cleverly arranged tunes yet. Remaining witty and ever tongue in cheek, the band stayed true its genre-bending roots, bringing together funk, disco, punk and pop influences in creating the five tracks the EP so proudly boasts.
Ahead of Borneo’s tour of Rebel Mindtricks down the East Coast, we find out some more about how this EP came together.
“We were fortunate to work with Nick Franklin on this EP.” Borneo remarks. “He’s kept our bowls of miso steaming from start to finish, you can hear the Kung Fu filling up the tracks. Rebel Mindtricks covers a fair bit of territory with songs about saving the world, freedom, the ticking clock, attachments, spaciousness & Miso Soup; all the big ones. The mind is a powerful tool, use it wisely.”

THE KNIFE
Two humans are at home and have found themselves tangled in ropes. Hopes, desires, memories, expectations. God walks in and says, “Someone hand me the Knife.”
MISO
How do we treat humans who misbehave? We lock them up, brand them as criminals then throw away the key. This song is one of hope and healing, of the great Miso King, who some say is destined to descend upon earth to put an end to disparity and suffering, to heal our communities.
