The Ruminaters‘ new album Welcome to Flight S.U.N 91 is out on Friday – a delicious musical romp built that further establishes the Sydneysiders as a band to keep well on your radars. You may have recently seen The Rumies on stages on the east coast with Grouplove last month but of course, they’ve not taken any time at all off; currently out on their ‘Left Our Jobs Forever Tour’, The Ruminaters are bringing Welcome to Flight S.U.N 91 to an east coast venue near you through until the end of the month.
Ahead of the album’s official release however, we’ve got the scoop on how these songs came together…
I’m The Sun That Shines From Your Mind
This song is the launch of the sun. Shining from the listeners’ mind. I wrote this song late one night in our studio on my own. I just had a fuzzy guitar going and big delay on my voice. Felt like I was preaching some strange sun cult music. It wasn’t until Rob Brinkmann our producer heard the voice memo of it and was convinced this had to be on the album. It kind of paved the way for the whole album and sparked the concept of the sun flying.
I Swear
This was an angry nonsense rant I was expressing one day. I got pissed off at something and was just playing one chord and screaming out the window what ever came to my head. Their was originally about 20 verses but cut it all down.
No Good Lover
Probably the darkest song on the album. We played around with a bunch of vocals. We just layered them up to make them sound as dark and scary as possible. I was listening to a lot of Fat White Family when writing this. So I guess it’s kind of got that dark sound from them. Mossy plays a pretty simple guitar line but just fucks it up totally with whatever pedals he was using.
Psychopath For You
Mossy plays some pretty whack guitar on this. A lot of people think it’s some sort of keyboard playing the main line. But he’s actually just doing something strange with his guitar. The guitar kind of sounds like a samurai sword flying through the galaxy.
Art Song
This is one of the strangest songs we have ever written. We called it “Art Song”, because it’s like an abstract painting. It’s all over the shop. Goes from high pitch singing to dark swarms of bees and heavy fuzz. Pretty strange stuff.
Man Holds A Gun
I think this was the earliest written song on the album. We wrote it a long time ago but never really played around with it in too much depth until we got to London to record. It’s a nice country sounding song. It talks about how parenting and bad habits get passed on from generation to generation. I feel like guns are probably one of the most fucked up things that gets passed on. I don’t get how America is still allowing people to own guns so easily. That’s just one shit thing that get passed on.
Boys Off Work
This is a song that is just a reminder for us of what we want. Out goal is to quit our jobs and be living how we want to be. Playing music.
Babysitter
We have never gotten this keys orientated before. So it was fun playing around with different synths and keyboards. None of us really play keys so it took awhile to get everything down. But it’s one of our favourites on the album. It’s about a kid who invites a girl over to help him babysit a little kid named Billy. A bunch of lying goes down in it.
Hospital Bar
I don’t know how this story came about? It is completely fictional and it took two different songs blended together to make. I had the main idea about a hospital bar that I was jamming around with a friend. Also had this story about Miami and it making me sick. So we just put the two together.
Jesus Was A Rock N Roller
This is one of the most meaningful songs on the album. It’s just about people trying to rule other people. I don’t think anyone should be able to tell some who and who they can’t love. People who do that sort of thing are fucked. If someone else’s marriage is affecting you, you should probably stop being a moody prick and think about something else. We had my favourite moment recording at the end of this song. We had about 20 red wined friends in the studio doing a “love” sing a long.
I Was The Sun That Shined From Your Mind
This is a regurgitation of the first song “I’m The Sun That Shines From Your Mind” Just an acoustic jam with everyone around one mic. Rob Brinkmann added his classic flutes section through out it too.
Sunday’s Almost Gone
This song’s about weekends being over with the one you love and having to go back to another week at work. But the light being there is always going to be more weekends and Sundays. It’s the big epic at the end of the album. To me, it doesn’t sound like Ruminaters at all. But then again I don’t know what we are meant to sound like.
This whole album has so many different sounds on it. We don’t really want to lock ourselves into any sound. We love the freedom of writing anything we want. A lot of bands get ridiculed for changing their sound up. I think that’s bullshit. Musicians shouldn’t be tied down to any sound. If they’ve already created something they shouldn’t have to try recreate it over and over again.
