Jonathan Zawada will have the sails of the Sydney Opera House when Vivid Sydney comes calling this month, bringing the specially-commissioned piece Metamethemagical to life.
The 3D light sculpture will debut at 6pm on May 25th, traversing themes of science, nature and culture. Having already established himself as an artist in demand and is renowned for his unique style and collaborations with the likes of Moses Sumney and The Presets, Zawada’s presence at Vivid in this capacity makes for a perfect fit.
“Interacting with an icon as beautiful as the Sydney Opera House really feels like a once in a lifetime opportunity.” Zawada has explained. “Metamathemagical explores the concept of creation and the creative process, both on an individual, personal level, but also a cosmic and environmental one. I’ve taken inspiration from the natural world around us and the synthetic world of artificial materials, substances and textures. The Opera House is a completely unique piece of geometry so rather than simply thinking of it as a two-dimensional surface to project onto, I created Metamathemagical as a 3D work from the very start using open source software to create many of the colours and textures.”
Giddy up. We can’t wait to see it.
Vivid Sydney runs from May 25th through until June 16th. You can see Zawada’s work on the Opera House from 6pm – 11pm each night.
