With her debut solo record LoveLaws bringing forth some great musical tones from Theresa Wayman, we spoke with her recently about where this album came from in terms of where her creative mindset was at the time.
The Warpaint legend this week brings us a little playlist she’s curated – songs that make her want to create. Songs that get her in the mood to play around with new sounds and music of her own.
“There’s a new artist I just discovered on there. His name is Dick Stusso.” she explains. “He’s my friend’s cousin. How often does your friend say, “Come see my cousin play”, and you go and actually like what you hear?! Not too often… he really blew me away. Inventive but also rooted in something classic and very DIY.”
“I put Rihanna‘s “Stay” on there… a song that taught me a lot about giving a clear and simple message from the heart. Something that everyone can relate to goes far. We all want to feel like someone gets us.”
“Vince Staples‘ “Dopeman”, production is unreal to me.” she adds. “The vocals and the backing vocals are so satisfying. Lightnin’ Hopkins is just so elemental. I aim to be able to just sing and play and tap in… no smoke and mirrors. No complications.”
