Interview: Argus and The Liar’s Joseph Duigan checks in ahead of Scouted in Adelaide

With only a few weeks to go, the Adelaide music community is gearing up for a night of live music unlike any other, with the Scouted music showcase series taking over the city. Rocket Bar is hosting the AU Review and an excellent list of artists – including Argus and The Liar.

Find out some more about how the band is anticipating the event!

What do you think an event like Scouted means for a music community like Adelaide’s?

Scouted is a good opportunity for Adelaide bands to play in front of what our bass player ‘Dapper’ Dan Davis calls ‘the movers and shakers’ of the music industry. Quite often the big bands and the big wigs they attract don’t come to A town (local speak for Adelaide)…

You’re playing up at Rocket Bar; have you played the venue before and if so, what is one significant gig memory of the venue (as a performer or punter) that you can tell us about?

I have played at Rocket before. One significant memory I have is getting in a fight with a punter while on stage because masculine toxicity is a real issue in our society.

Do you find the idea of ‘performing for industry’ daunting at all?

No, Lucy from the band is particularly not daunted, she loves to be reminded that there may be industry people critiquing her performance.

How crucial do you think these types of showcases are for the smaller music communities in Australia (i.e. the ones that aren’t Melbourne/Sydney)?

These types of events are crucial. It’s hard to be heard from outside Melbourne and Sydney and although Adelaide has some huge names in the industry, particularly in hip hop,  we don’t feel like we fit in with those artists and don’t want to be pigeon holed so this gives us an opportunity to show what we do to people other than our aunties and our super-fan ‘Darren the red-head’ (may not be actual name).

In terms of your show – how would you say it has developed over the last year, and what are you looking forward to the most about performing on Friday night?

Our band has taken on two new members over the past year so the sound has really reflected those changes. We also bought a white board which has made practise more professional. We can’t wait to play our new songs and I’m most looking forward to hanging out with Ellie Duigan because she only comes to Adelaide when we have a show.

Have you been working on any new music you can tell us about?

Yes, we have been working on an EP and some side projects too.

What has been a highlight for you creatively, so far this year?

The highlight of this year has been writing new songs and getting our EP together, we are excited about releasing it.

Where are you hoping to take your music by year’s end?

By the end of the year we hope to confirm some O.S tours and launch our EP. The whole band would also like Ellie to admit that Joseph is the better cook.

Keep up to date with Argus and The Liar here.
